Rodale Organic Gardening

Rodale has published the best books on all aspect of organic gardening and farming.

Rodale Organic Gardening is very popular amongst organic gardeners worldwide. J.I. Rodale was responsible for the move towards natural foods and natural products in the United States, and he is credited with first using the word “organic” to describe the natural method of gardening and farming.  He believed that modern agriculture technique and American eating habits were not healthy.

J.I. Rodale moved to Pennsylvania in the late 1930.  He bought a farm where he could express his intense interest in organic gardening and organic farming.  On his farm he tested his theories about organic methods.

To Rodale, issues of agriculture and health were inseparable.  Healthy soil required the use of compost, and the avoidance of pesticide and artificial fertilizers.

Developing and demonstrating practical methods of rebuilding natural soil fertility became Rodale’s primary goal.  The concept was simple, but back in the Forties also revolutionary.  Rodale refused to give up in his belief in organic living.

In 1947, he founded the Soil & Health Foundation.  Its mission was to conduct scientific research and educating the public on organic soil, food and health. He created many publications related to Health, (aff), but the granddaddy of them all and the most popular with organic gardeners is the  Rodale organic gardening magazine.(aff)  Rodale communicated the idea of organic gardening  -  creating soil rich in nutrients and free of chemicals -in his magazine Rodale Organic Gardening.  He shared his discoveries about organic gardening with gardeners everywhere and finally people began to listen.

After his death in 1971, his son Robert Rodale carried on the Rodale Organic Gardening movement.  He expanded the farm and established what is now The Rodale Institute.  Today, Rodale Institute and Rodale Press is lead by a third generation of Rodale descendants.  Rodale Press has risen to an international publisher of health, fitness, nutrition and organic gardening information.  The Rodale Institute continues its mission to improve the health of people and the planet through research and education that focus on organic gardening, farming, food and living.

An increasing interest in organic gardening is due to Rodale Organic Gardening Magazine

The Rodale Oganic Gardening philosophy was:  Healthy Soil = Healthy Food = Healthy People

Even today, Rodale Organic Gardening is the most widely read gardening magazine.
